Wi-Fi technology takes another monumental leap with the introduction of Wi-Fi 7, enhancing both residential and professional network environments. Among the enhancements, the new standard boasts several innovative features, with the Wi-Fi Alliance revealing the major advancements in their recent statements.

One of the headline features is the support for 320MHz channels, which effectively doubles the channel bandwidth previously used in Wi-Fi 6 for a notable speed enhancement, leveraging the highest available bandwidth on 5GHz routers. However, the availability of these wider channels is tied to the specific country regulations, being accessible only in regions where the 6GHz band is permitted. The Wi-Fi Alliance's website lists the countries that have authorized use of the 6GHz band, including the US, UK, Australia, Japan, and Mexico, among others.

The introduction of Multi-Link Operation (MLO) marks another significant step forward. This feature allows networked devices to simultaneously send and receive data over multiple frequencies, which encompasses 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands. The benefits here are manifold: Enhanced throughput, increased reliability, and notably, a substantial reduction in latency. Such improvements are particularly advantageous to virtual reality applications. It is suggested that VR headsets equipped with Wi-Fi 7 could, theoretically, stream video over the 6GHz band while concurrently sending tracking information over the 5GHz band, thereby delivering peak performance through the division of tasks.

The discussion around latency doesn't end there, as Wi-Fi 7 ushers in better support for what's known as deterministic latency. This complex concept refers to the ability of devices within the network to predict the timing of potential connection delays. Such foresight could prove invaluable for VR headsets, providing them with the capacity to manage latency more effectively to sustain a consistent connection. While this feature won't entirely eliminate latency, it's poised to significantly improve the user experience.

Advancing the modulation technology, Wi-Fi 7 incorporates 4K QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation), which surpasses the current 1024 QAM by enabling the transmission of 20 percent more data.

Furthermore, Wi-Fi 7 retains compatibility with earlier Wi-Fi iterations, ensuring that legacy devices can continue to connect seamlessly.

Looking ahead to future devices that will benefit from these innovations, some companies have already made strides by introducing Wi-Fi 7-supported routers. For instance, Netgear's Nighthawk RS700 emerged last year. Other major players like Acer are stepping into the arena with their announcement at CES 2024 regarding their Predator Connect gaming routers that are set to exploit Wi-Fi 7's rapid connection speeds.

For those not yet prepared to transition to Wi-Fi 7, alternatives like Wi-Fi 6 routers still offer excellent performance, with many top recommendations available, such as those listed by TechRadar for 2024.
